Pinchweld Rust Policy
Rust is the reddish-brown coating that is formed on metal through an oxidation process where iron or steel is exposed to water and air. This coating consists mainly of ferric oxide and ferric hydroxide. Both of these chemical compounds are not compatible for bonding to adhesives that are used in the proper installation of windshields. Rust is something that begins slowly and develops over time. In the beginning stages the rust coating is very slight and can usually be removed with no real skill. However, in the latter stages when the metal is completely destroyed, the missing metal needs to be replaced by a skilled auto body technician.
It is the policy of Lee & Cates Glass, Inc. that no windshield will be installed where rust is present in the pinchweld that will affect the proper adhesion of the urethane used to set a windshield. The rusted area must be repaired before installation. If the rust is in the early stages, we may be able to remove the rust with tools and apply a primer for proper adhesion. However, if the rusted area requires repair work beyond our skills, then we must use others with the necessary skill level to make the repair properly.
Visible Rust: Rust that is visible before the removal begins. Customers will be informed that the windshield cannot be removed without repairing the rusted area. We will assist in finding an area body shop that will repair the affected area. Under no circumstances can we start the job until the rusted area is repaired.
Discovered Rust: Rust that is discovered after the removal of the windshield. Customers will be informed that the windshield cannot be installed without repairing the rusted area. We will assist in finding an area body shop that will repair the affected area. Under no circumstances can we complete the job until the rusted area is repaired.
