Why does it take so long for a windshield replacement?
Proper installation is critical for windshield
retention and safety. Adhesives used must meet
certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards,
based on tests that have certain retention requirements
to insure that the windshield will stay intact
in an accident. This “Safe Drive Away”
time is based on temperature and humidity and
type of adhesive. Lee & Cates Glass uses a
variety of adhesives that have “Safe Drive
Away “ times ranging from 30 minutes to
several hours depending on the weather. Top

What is the best cleaner for glass and mirrors?
While there are many good brands on the market,
the most economical glass and mirror cleaner is
a mixture of 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 water.
Soaps usually streak glass or mirror. If this
occurs take the vinegar water solution and use
old newspaper. The newspaper doesn’t leave
lint on the glass. On mirrors be sure never to
use abrasives, alkali, ammonia or acids. These
are very harmful to the silver backing. Top

Why do the edges around mirrors turn black?
Unfortunately, we live in a world whose environment
has many contaminates floating in our air. Contaminates
and natural moisture attack the vulnerable edges
of mirrors eroding the silver backing which causes
discoloring and eventual flaking of the silver.
At Lee & Cates Glass we use the most current
technology available to seal the edges to retard
this effect. Top

What is the difference between tempered glass
and safety glass?
There are primarily two types of safety glass.
- Tempered glass
is a safety glass that is used for entrance
doors in buildings and certain other building
locations as specified in the building codes.
In addition, it is used in vehicles in door
glasses, vent glasses and back glasses. In manufacturing
this tempered glass is heated to over 1,100
degrees and then shot with cool air jets causing
the glass to cool very rapidly. This cooling
process causes the outside surface to become
much harder than the inner part. When broken,
it shatters into tiny fragments with rounded
edges.
- Laminated glass
is used primarily for vehicle windshields. This
glass is made of two pieces of glass bonded
together by a plastic inner layer. The plastic
inner layer called polyvinyl butyral cushions
crash impacts and prevents glass from separating
which reduces the danger of serious lacerations.

Why do insulated or thermal glass units fog?
All insulated glass will eventually fail. The
manufacturing process seals two pieces of glass
together with a vacuum created in the center that
produces the insulating effect. Assuming proper
installation, ultraviolet rays and moisture are
the major reasons for seal failure, which allows
water infiltration causing the unit to fog. Lee
& Cates Glass provides a limited 5-year warranty
on insulated glass. Top

What are the different edges used on tabletops
and desktops?
There are six types of edges that are used to
produce custom tabletops or desktops. They are:
 |
Pencil
Edge: This edge has a highly polished
rounded effect. |
 |
Beveled
Edge: This edge has a straight slope
to the edge from ½ inch to 1½-inch
slope. |
 |
Ogee
Edge: This edge is similar to the beveled
edge but has a curved slope rather than straight.
|
 |
Mitre
Edge: This edge is similar to the beveled
edge except that it slopes to a smaller end.
|
| |
Seamed
Edge: This is the most economical and
most popular. This edge features a clean cut
with the sharp edge sanded lightly for safe
handling. |
| |
Flat Edge: This
edge is highly polished like the pencil edge
but is flat like the seamed edge.
